A four to eight week pilot covers a site visit, sensor selection, a gateway, segmentation, a working dashboard and a review of whether the data is telling you something you can act on. If it is not, you stop there having spent very little.
Dust, heat, vibration, unstable mains and patchy connectivity are treated as the normal case. Enclosure ratings, cable specification, power backup and cellular fallback are decided at the site visit, not assumed from a datasheet.
Where you already run SCADA, a maintenance system or an ERP, telemetry is fed into it rather than parked in a separate dashboard nobody opens.
Almost never. Most legacy equipment can be instrumented externally with clamp meters, vibration sensors, temperature probes or flow meters, or read from an existing PLC. Replacement is a last resort, not a starting point.
Gateways buffer readings locally and forward them when the link returns, so a connectivity outage costs you a delay rather than a gap in the record. Critical alerts can also be sent over cellular as a fallback.
Operational technology is kept on its own segment with a controlled path to the business network, so a compromise on the office side cannot reach the plant floor. Segmentation is designed before the first sensor goes on.
Depending on the location: mains with battery backup, solar with a battery bank, or long-life battery sensors where readings are infrequent. Power is scoped during the site visit rather than assumed.
